Topic of the Week: Children
“And people were bringing children to Him [Jesus] that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, He became indignant and said to them, ‘Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.’ Then, He embraced them, blessed them, and placed His hands on them.” (Mark 4:35-41)
My Talk with Jesus
Today’s Bible passage is one of the favorite passages that people often use on the occasion of a child’s Baptism. Without a doubt, Jesus loved children and had a special bond with them. They definitely have His ears and His heart. We wonder why children do not use that privilege and come to Jesus often to ask Him to help them and others as well. In fact, Jesus came to the rescue of some children during His years of ministry and healed them from sickness, even death. He showed them not only the love of God but also the miracles of Heaven.
What is it about children that bring out of the Lord Jesus His tender care and special attention for them? First, children have a simple faith. They do not place conditions on or bargain with Jesus for their belief in God. They do not write a big book to explain their faith or create complicated rituals to show their love for God. They simply trust in God. Second, they always have an upbeat attitude and hopeful spirit. For they believe that God will take care of them. Third, they do not hold grudges and can forgive easily. They might get mad at someone about something, but quickly forget about it. Fourth, they always have an open mind and are willing to try something new. They are open to the Holy Spirit to guide and show them different ways of thinking or feeling about something. Finally, they are usually honest in their thoughts and pure in their hearts. They always say what they think and tell how they feel. They do not hide their thoughts or feelings. Perhaps these are some of the reasons that make Jesus love children.
Lord Jesus, I want to see
Jesus, the Best Friend and Defender of Children, You call on everyone to become like children if they want to enter the Kingdom of God. Sometimes, I might ignore the great qualities above and let the world lure me into taking up some bad habits of an adult like swearing, smoking, or drinking. But, all those adult things will get me into a lot of trouble and harm my relationship with you and my family. I certainly do not want to do that. All the fun in the world will come to an end at some point. However, my family and you will always be there for me through all the good and bad times of my life until the end of my life. The best way for me to stay close to you and keep these relationships strong is to work on the fine qualities of a child every day. Most important, I must make good use of your love for children. I must come to you often in prayer to share my needs and the requests of others like my family and unfortunate people around me. That is an honor I should be proud of and use more regularly so that many people can meet you and find you in their lives.
This week, I will come to you, Lord, in prayer and ask for the needs of my family, friends, cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or some unfortunate people that I have learned about on the news. As a child, I know I have your ears and heart to hear my prayers. Thank you, Jesus, the Best Friend and Defender of Children. I love you!
